What can I buy: Workout clothes

In my need for some new workout essentials, I popped into Old Navy where there was an entire section of the store dedicated to active wear. More pants styles and sports bras then I remembered in trips past, I filled my arms with pieces and headed to the checkout. Only $60 later and I had a new workout ensemble. This got me thinking, if I stopped into another favorite store, Lululemon, what could I buy for only $60. Enjoy!

*This bright pink looks phenomenal on her, as well as the silhouette. I really like that she chose an up and coming designer, too. One caveat, different shoes. Someone her height and a below the knee hemline needs less bootie and more pump giving the look a cleaner line all the way through, something like this Max Kibardin satin and mesh platform, seen above.

*Lea is definitely pulling off this fringe dress. Not many people can wear this and not look like a spool of yarn that is coming undone. Well played, Lea.

*Miley, I am proud of you in this moment. This dress is sexy bot not too sexy and surprisingly elegant. The look is one of her best yet with the side swept hair, minimal jewelry and ladylike heels.

Maternity Clothes

My husband and I are expecting our first little one at the beginning of the summer and I am starting to feel a tiny need for clothes with more room around the middle. I have researched high and low, far and wide, for flattering and affordable maternity clothes, there is no reason to not feel stylish when carrying around a belly full of baby. So, I give you my list of my favorite discoveries and show you some of the pieces I have already purchased. I am still flaunting 4 inch platforms and plan on wearing them until I walk into the delivery room. Enjoy!

Gap: For your basic t-shirts, camis and sweaters.
Topshop: Affordable and stylish, get your style on without the price!
Isabella Oliver: Based out of the UK, they ship to the several countries, including the US. They have a very large celebrity following and the prices are 100% reasonable. Loving their small but ideal jacket selection.
ASOS: Dresses galore! I adore this retailer already and having fantastic maternity pieces makes me love it even more!
ShopBop: Great selection of maternity jeans, I have heard great things about the J Brand Mama J Skinny Jean.
Zara: While they don't carry a maternity line, I have found several pieces that work wonderfully with the belly.

Oh, and just a reminder for all my pregnant friends. On those days when you feel like nothing fits, throw on a simple black dress, tights and heels (the highest you can tolerate), then layer on a statement necklace and bangle bracelets. You will feel and look like a million bucks :)

2011, you were a great year. Cathy Horyn of the New York Times listed the top ten fashion moments here and I agree with all of them, especially the insurmountable Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met.

Bring on 2012. The year of what? Well, definitely stripes, pleats, Aztec prints, pastel colored pumps, sculptural sandals, skirts will remain in the midi range, mixed prints will still be changing the dynamic of how we put together ensembles and don't be surprised when military green makes its way into your closet pre-fall. Gift receipts, returns and exchanges

The holiday season of gift giving is upon us, and so is the inevitable return/exchange. We all try our very best to purchase gifts that will be loved and used, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. So, as a lovely courtesy many stores offer gift receipts for purchases, this is a receipt that does not have the price of the item listed. This way, if a return/exchange needs to happen, the store has the information at the ready. Even if the item you are returning goes on sale between now and the time you return it, you will still have the full value of that item to return or exchange, as long as you have the gift receipt.

So, double check those return/exchange policies and always include a gift receipt, when you can!

The season of The Cold

As the weather turns colder, then warmer, then colder, those pesky colds rear their ugly heads, and it reared it straight at me. Three days in and this thing has me stir crazy. Luckily, I have found some wonderful distractions. Here are some ways to get thru the sniffly, cough filled days of a seasonal cold.

1. Comfy yet chic clothing, I love the J. Crew Lazy Day and lightweight hoody (pocket for tissues!), plus a nice little cami. Old Navy, can't beat them.

2. Soothing body wash like the Eucalyptus from Bath and Body, hello sinus relief!

3. Food Network, so much entertainment, and ideas.

4. Lemon and honey tea always tastes that much yummier served in a stylish cup.

5. Spring 2012 collections, looking at fashion just makes me feel better.

Note on styling: When flaunting this oversized blazer, keep the remainder of your ensemble tailored. Too much fabric, especially on the bottom, will give you no shape at all. Slim pants, a tailored dress or skirt/blouse finish off this look perfectly.

A note on style: the thicker the wale (number of ridges per inch) the more bulky and less flattering the pants can appear. I would opt for a wale above 11. The choices above are all higher than 11. Puffy coats (down filled and quilted) are on the minds of friends and clients. The search has been extensive and lots of great choices have been discovered. I love a great puffy coat, cozy, warm and perfect for the chilly days ahead. It's also a great gift for the holiday season! Remember to check the cleaning instructions on your coat, some are machine washable but care needs to be taken when drying, place a few tennis balls inside the dryer with the coat so the feathers don't clump together causing dampness to remain inside.Enjoy!

Styling: Charity Cocktail Event

My friend Ani is headed downtown tonight for an art filled charity event. The vibe calls for something sexy and fun. This gorgeous Milly dress was perfect, especially with the hi/low hem line. Vince Camuto suede booties are perfect for adding texture and giving the ensemble an even more funky downtown vibe. Tonight will be a little chilly, a button less blazer will keep her warm and is open enough to not constrict the flow of the dress. Add hoop earrings, a statement cuff and structured clutch, et voilá, ensemble complete. The only purchase we made was the dress, everything else was shopped from her closet!

Makeup is simple, the dress is really the statement tonight. Keep the face dewy and clean with a smooth foundation. Add a creamy glistening base shadow to the eyes, black liner smudged a bit at the edges, then a few layers of mascara and a nice pink red lipstick. Done!

Inspiration: October shopping

I love shopping in October. Not only is the weather fine but fall essentials are fully loaded into stores. As my inspiration board grows with wants, needs and loves for the autumn months, the pieces below keep finding their way to the top of the list. Inspiration: Alber Elbaz

In the September 17th issue of the Financial Time's How to Spend It, I came across the most inspiring article about Alber Elbaz, the creative director of Lanvin. The article touches on how Elbaz came into fashion, his trials, tribulations and great success at Lanvin. What I found so wonderfully lovely and refreshing is how genuinely kind Elbaz seems to be. The article is appropriately titled "More Mister Nice Guy." You can find it here. I included some of my favorite Elbaz remarks from the Financial Times article:

"I hate everything I did yesterday. I have to: otherwise how would I have the energy and drive to do something today?"

"Be both big and small"

"My dream is to unite all designers of the world and create a union so we can all talk together. Then we can see how to better protect our creativity. You know, I felt terrible when they were saying I would replace Karl at Chanel. I wrote him a note apologizing."

Below are some favorites from the Lanvin spring 2012 collection, which was sophisticate and sexy. The color palette was clean with black, white, grey, shades of blush and navy as the majority of the collection. A standout was the group of pastel cocktail dresses with sheer chiffon gently forming the skirt. Enjoy!

Fall starts today and there is a crisp chill in the air. So, what will keep you warm in the months ahead? A cape, of course! This very chic and au courant style is a perfect update to any wardrobe. There are a myriad of shapes, colors and patterns from which to choose: long, cropped, minimalist, cozy, black, shades of tan, plaid and tweed. Take your pick!

A note on fit: If you are short, like me, look for a tailored cape that is shorter in length. As much as I would LOVE to pull off the L'Agence cape below, there is far too much fabric, even with hemming. Enjoy!

Latte in hand, I stepped into the elevator. Four people followed, gently creating their own space in the 4x6 foot area. Rushing to catch the elevator, two other people pushed me back, forcing me to step on the poor girl behind me and spill the latte all over my shirt "Oh, man." Now, kind people would say they're sorry, or something. This girl didn't say a thing, and then decided to snicker about it with her co-worker as she exited the elevator before me. Not nice.

So, what do we do in this emergency? Hightail it to the bathroom, apply copious amounts of water, a lithe soap, start dabbing, and pray a bit. Well, soap, you have saved the day. I thank you. I could have had a meltdown of epic proportions and an emergency trip to Zara, which would undoubtedly end up in a spree to quell my emotional state. My ensemble is saved, and I am ready for the fashion shows today.

Please remember to be polite and apologize when you run someones coffee into their clothing. xo

Small Fri-Day

Small, compact, pint-sized, pocket-rocket, tiny, wee; call me what you want, but good things come in small packages. I am a proud 4' 11'', but most people know me as about 5' 3'' since I refuse to wear flats, unless I am working out. So, I think it's about time that us shorties were given a day to talk about fashion and how it fits us, welcome Small Fri-Day.

Everything must be hemmed, taken in, taken out, adjusted here and there to really look right. I dream of a day when there are actually really great pieces for petites (something I constantly work on in my mind). Fortunately, there are more and more stores/designers offering petite sizing. For many, many years I have searched for a petite black work pant that was young and flattering, that didn't need to be altered to death and didn't rise up past my belly button (you know what I am talking about). I am still searching. In the meantime, I have found some pretty good alternatives. All of the styles below are available in petite or short length. Enjoy!

A note on fit: be watchful of wide leg pants (not bell bottoms, which are nice and snug around the thighs), it can give a small stature a very stocky silhouette. See examples below. Also, if you are longing to wear a cropped pant, ankle length is best, once you get above the ankle the body gets chopped up and looks even shorter.

While strolling thru Soho last night on my way home, I popped into Topshop and found this grey layered biker jacket. It is perfect for fall. Made of 100% Lyocell gives it a nice soft denim like hand, this softness helps keep it comfortable but the durability of the fabric helps maintains it shape. Enjoy!

I am a planner. My friends and family are never surprised when they receive itineraries for a weekend away, maps for a night out, idea sheets for an event I am planning, it really never stops. Organizing, planning, preparing, it's just something I do. So, when it comes to planning my day to day life I have always used a good old fashioned book planner. Attempts have been made at using the calendar app on my iPhone, but it just doesn't feel right. Yes, you could call me old school but there is something quite satisfying about a hand written schedule.

I don't gravitate towards one brand, but I do need a daily layout (with hours listed, even better). Here are a few I am eyeing for 2012, oh and the adorable handbags that would tote it around, ok and heels to finish it off. What can I say, I am a planner. Enjoy!

I am not going back to school but I fondly remember back to school shopping. We always stopped at Gap, The Limited, Nordstrom, and Macy's. Loading our arms with pants, skirts, tops, jackets, at one point boxer shorts (it was the early 90's people) and shoes. We would bring home our haul and dive into it piece by piece to choose the best outfit for the first day of school. The first day was the best. Feeling nervous and excited, the day had to start out right with the perfect ensemble. So, if I was going shopping for back to school, as an adult, this is what I would purchase. Enjoy!

I can't wait any longer to chat about Fall 2011, even if it is 90 degrees outside. My magazine and catalog tear-outs are building up in a pile on my desk, waiting patiently to be pinned to the ever expanding inspiration board. So, let the excitement of wool coats, new tights, darling hats and long sleeves begin!

Do you remember "Opposites Game?" We used to play it as children. Anything someone says, we would say the opposite. It was terribly annoying but filled us with endless giggles. Well, as adults we can play opposites again, but with our clothes. Fall is filled with silhouettes and styles that are the antithesis of each other. You can mix and match these trends, just make sure that your proportions are correct. Flaunt a modern grunge coat with a soft as silk gown or try colorful tights with that structured minimalist dress. Grown up games are so gratifying, and much less annoying. Enjoy!

If you live in a New York City apartment, you are well aware that space is limited and storage is absent. I have an incredibly hard time finding knobs or flat surfaces to dry my stockings/tights or hand wash only goods. Well, to my delight, Daily Candy's weekend guide delivered this gem to my mailbox this morning.

The Sheila Maid Clothes Airer from Ancient Industries. This is genius (if you don't have super high ceilings). It doesn't take up any floor space and is fully functional with a stellar pulley system. My best friend since 7th grade is having her first baby, a little girl. I was honored to throw her a baby shower over the weekend with my mother and sister. My parents have a beautiful garden (Alex Ashton is the phenomenal landscaper) that made the perfect setting for our Garden/Book themed party. Kate Godzik (the momma-to-be's closest friend and college roomie) of M Designs created the darling invitations and book insert. Enjoy!

Ingredients

3/4 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour is my favorite)
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 to 7 ounces very good semisweet chocolate, finely chopped (I use Ghiradelli semi sweet or milk chocolate morsels, it's my favorite)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix together the butter and 1 cup of sugar until they are just combined. Add the vanilla. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour and salt, then add them to the butter-and-sugar mixture. Mix on low speed until the dough starts to come together. Dump onto a surface dusted with flour and shape into a flat disk. Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.

Roll the dough 1/2-inch thick and cut with a 3 by 1-inch finger-shaped cutter. Place the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the edges begin to brown. Allow to cool to room temperature.

When the cookies are cool, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Put 3 ounces of the chocolate in a glass bowl and microwave on high power for 30 seconds. (Don't trust your microwave timer; time it with your watch.) Stir with a wooden spoon. Continue to heat and stir in 30-second increments until the chocolate is just melted. Add the remaining chocolate and allow it to sit at room temperature, stirring often, until it's completely smooth. Stir vigorously until the chocolate is smooth and slightly cooled; stirring makes it glossier.

Drizzle 1/2 of each cookie with just enough chocolate to coat it.

I have a one week trip to California coming up, when it comes to extended stays, strategic packing is key. 3 pairs of shoes (not including running shoes) is the max I like to pack, plus the pair I wear on the place. Checking luggage is a debacle, I much prefer to head straight to my destination and avoid waiting for the conveyer belt to, fingers crossed, deliver my favorite Swiss Army rolly bag with the big red ribbon. So, since shoes take up the most space it is important I create my ensembles based around the shoes.

This trip is filled with activities: throwing a baby shower with my mom and sister for my best friend, lounging poolside, horseback riding with my aunt in Santa Margarita, then a couple days in sunny Santa Barbara, including a dinner with my newly engaged cousin and her darling fiance. A varied wardrobe is necessary. Everything below fits, neatly packed, into my carry-on, along with makeup/toiletries bag. All other items, like laptop, magazines, scarf and snacks, go in my handbag.

It is getting warm hear in NYC and the humidity is kicking into gear. Something light, airy and breathable is essential. Ensembles for a beach wedding need to be comfortable and easy. Shoes that easily slip on for the dancing and off for the beach side ceremony are key. Met Gala: McQueen at his best

Last night was the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala paying tribute to the late and great Alexander McQueen. The stars were out in full force and while many of the choices were safe, there were some standouts, like Jay-Z and Beyonce, Liv Tyler and Blake Lively. My number one may go to Ginnifer Goodwin, she rocked a gorgeous kelly green gown from non other than TopShop. Shades of green had a presence at the event, from dresses, to shoes to earrings, tiny pops of this delightful spring color made its way down the red carper. The McQueen exhibit, "Savage Garden", where over 100 of his designs will be on display, opens on Wednesday at the Met. Enjoy!

I am off to Vegas on Friday for what is bound to be an epic and hands-down wonderful wedding. Pool party on Friday, lounge by the pool Saturday before the evening wedding, then Easter mass and brunch on Sunday. I am keeping it casual for the Friday and Sunday events, maxi dresses and espadrilles. The main event on Saturday night is cocktail attire, so I am playing up the sparkle of the strip with bangles and cocktail rings. Last night, I had the extreme pleasure of seeing "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" starring Daniel Radcliffe (yes, that Daniel Radcliffe) and John Larroquette. To say I was entertained is an understatement, I literally danced out of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Now, I am a HUGE musical lover, traditional, revival musicals like "How to Succeed," are particular favorites. This one did not disappoint! Radcliffe was adorable as J. Peirrepont Finch and Larroquette portrayed J.B. Biggley with perfectly timed humor. Highly recommend!

In honor of "How to Succeed in Business," a few smart suits from Saks Fifth Avenue for that climb up the corporate ladder and reasonable heels from ASOS, so that you don't teeter when you reach the top. Enjoy!

Spring Closet

It's that time of year again when we try on the clothes, clean the closets, store the winter goods and get ready to flaunt some serious spring ensembles.

Not sure where to begin, here is a step by step guide on flipping your closet and prepping for the warm weather ahead.

1. Try on your stored spring clothes. If you didn't wear it last year, or the year before, it's time to say goodbye, if it's in good condition then donate to charity, otherwise send it to recycle.

2. Shoes: check the heels of your spring shoes. If the balls of the feet or heel tips need to be fixed or replaced now is the time to take them into your favorite shoe repair spot.

3. What do you need/want for this season? I am sure you have a list, look thru it and see what you already have that can be paired with the new items. If you are on a serious budget, accessories are a great way to update your wardrobe. Think about adding texture and color to the basics in your closet.

4. If you live in an apartment, storage can be a huge headache. I am not a big fan of under bed storage, it messes with the energy flow of a room, but I, like so many apartment dwellers, don't have the luxury to not use it.Make sure to CLEAN all your garments before you store them for winter, if you dry clean, take them out of the bag before storing. Here are my favorite under-bed storage pieces...

5. Organize your spring hats, scarves and jewelry so they are readily accessible. Updating your wardrobe for spring is as easy as a few new accessories (see #3). All of my necklaces are hanging from push pins inside my closet. I open the doors and see everything I have right in front of me. I am not keen on those hanging jewelry organizers, with push pins I can grab and go. Another option are those little damage free hooks, like these from Command™.

6. Need a little more help.. you can always ask your favorite stylist to guide you through your transition. Enjoy!

Into the Blue

1 plane, 2 ferries and 3 taxis later, I am back from the British Virgin Islands, in my mind I am still snorkeling the reefs.

After gazing at shades of turquoise blue water for a week, it makes perfect sense to chat about the gorgeous blue hues for Spring. Turquoise, cerulean, pastel, they are all out in force, make sure to choose the best shade for you skin tone. Enjoy!

The maxi skirt is having a moment. Everyone is asking how to wear one and more importantly, can I wear it? Well, I say go for it. Find your favorite, compile images that you love, then go to the store and try the entire ensemble on. Bring a friend, or even an affordable stylist, who can give you a second, very honest, opinion. I am venturing to the warm waters of the Caribbean this weekend and my bags are packed. You can call me a planner but I love to use a checklist when I pack for a trip, this way I ensure, to the best of my ability, that I won't forget anything. I do not enjoy having to spend my shopping money on items I left at home. So here are some of the essentials I am bringing with me on my trip to the islands. Enjoy!

Anya Hindmarch Boat Tote is prefect for the beach and also moonlights as a carry-on bag.

Soft light weight hat, gotta love Eugenia Kim, is essential to protect from the sun and to add a little chic to any beach ensemble. A scarf has so many uses. A shawl, a wrap, a sarong. It is one of the most versatile pieces. Loving the Kiff Scarf from Calypso.

Favorite flip flops, they are thin, comfortable and so easy to pack. Castañer Espadrilles for day shopping and adventures off the beach.

Love the fit of J.Crew bikinis. Old Navy also has a great selection.

A tunic is perfect for covering up on the way to the beach and then easy to throw on for lunch by the pool. It is light and airy, so warm days are not a worry. This lace coverup from Joie is superb.

A maxi dress, like this one from ODYLYNE, is a great way to transition to night, add a pendant necklace and bracelets to feel a little more dressed up.

Beach read, my sister recommended this to me and I can't wait to read it before the movie comes out.

Neutrogena Cooling Mist is my choice for body sunblock. It doesn't feel oily or sticky and goes on pretty evenly. As for my face, I am a Dermalogica girl so the Solar Defense is my go to.

Oscar Fashion Recap

Last night's Oscar awards was filled with color. It was refreshing to see so little black on the red carpet. Red and silver stole the show but one of my favorite trends was the less is more makeup. The fashion really had to pop in order to work and it totally did.

Anne Hathaway's Oscar host ensemble was great (we were a little worried when we saw the ill-fitting Valentino she walked the red carpet in but she made us proud, props Rachel Zoe)...

Elle Collections Spring 2011. It is lovely and colorful and reminded me to chat about the colors for spring 2011, a little refresher. The use of color is a wonderful way to update any wardrobe. If you are more prone to black ensembles, then add a bright handbag or shoes or jewelry. Already wearing bright colors, then change the combination up, work with color blocking or master a new silhouette. Fashion is meant to be fun, expressive and flattering. Always choose tones that enrich your skin, not everyone can wear seafoam green, that's ok! There are plenty more shades of green and blue to work with. Enjoy!

The Oscars have a lot to live up to, first the Golden Globes now the the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The ladies of the big, and little, screen have been showing some major fashion chops. With fall 2011 shows starting next week, I am sure there will be more than a few throw-downs for the best dress on the runways, bring on the battle. Enjoy!

Spring/Summer Couture 2011

Elie Saab: A lovely blush tone began the show, followed by deep lavender, muted floral, ruby red, mossy green, ethereal silver white and black. By far my favorite collection of the Couture season, I so hope that the ladies at the Oscars choose from this fine assortment.

Valentino: Prim and soft are the key words to describe this light and airy collection. Blush tones and pastels, effervescent sequins with flowing pleats, folds and delicate lace. Two deep red dresses counter balanced the lightness in the palette.
